Asking for Help Is Hard — Unless You Ask for It in This Way.

How did that statement make you feel? Did you ever take someone up on the offer? Did you actually know what you needed at that moment?

While our loved ones really do want to help us during our times of need, Let me know if you need anything can put a lot of pressure on the one who is suffering. You might not know what you need. Or maybe you know exactly what you need, but you’re afraid it’s too much to ask of someone else.

Mothers in particular struggle with asking for what they need. Women are accustomed to taking on the burdens of their families and trying to do it all in a society that encourages us to do so. But I’ve seen more burned-out mothers than I can count in my practice over the years. The ones who need the most help often have the hardest time asking for it.

This is why I’m excited to tell you about a new site some friends of mine started:

NeedU is a place to give and get help. The site allows you to create a list of specific needs you have during a difficult season. From lawn care to meals to babysitting, NeedU is an easy way to let people know what you need or create a list for a friend in need. It’s like GoFundMe for personal services and help.

When I found out about NeedU, I immediately thought of all the parents in my community. Parents need help all the time. Single parents, new mothers, new fathers, parents going through a divorce, parents who are taking care of their own parents. Meeting the needs of your kids while having so many needs yourself is overwhelming. This is why something like NeedU is so beneficial for parents. It allows you to make a dream list of everything you wish someone else could do for you but you’re too afraid to ask.

NeedU’s process is simple. Create an account at their website, build your list of needs and then share it with family and friends. Your list is private and only shared with those you want it shared with.

This is also a great opportunity to build a list of needs for someone else. Maybe there’s a single mom in your life who could use some help getting Christmas gifts for her kids. Or maybe your friend is sick and needs help caring for her family. Or maybe you have a friend in the throes of finishing a degree while trying to raise kids and she could use a little extra help for the next few months. You could be the friend to make that happen, and NeedU makes it easy.

Asking for help is hard, but it doesn’t have to be. Especially during this holiday season, think about what you need or think about what a friend of yours needs. If COVID has taught us anything, it’s that community is crucial. Visit today and get the help from your community that you truly need.
